Bigwood School: Karate and Dance - Capturing Movement

A community based project centred on Bigwood School took the idea of karate as both a disciplined marital art and connected to the movement of dance a step further by asking some of the young artists at the school to interpret and capture movement.

Under the guidance of Wayne Fallon these young artists, in particular Tanner Corlett, Georgia Hillery, Joshua Peat and Alex Watts, produced a number of images, both visual and multi-media which can be accessed here. Included is a video and photographs documenting the process,

By reducing the gap between movement as art and sport as movement the whole school participated in a karate lesson, which introduced them to the way energy can be channelled into something productive - both physically and in sharpening mental processes. This was conducted by sensei Alan Campbell, who can be contacted at

A teacher's resource pack is being considered and should be available in September 2007. For those interested in karate please start by going to the following website www.thejks.com
